State Recognition

In 1986 the Meherrin Indian Tribe was recognized by the state of North Carolina as a State Recognized Tribe of Native Americans in North Carolina.

Federal Recognition

The Meherrin Indian Tribe is actively working on meeting the required Acknowledgment criteria set out by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for Federal Recognition.

Current Status of Petition for Federal Recognition: The Department of the Interior (BIA) Bureau of Indian Affairs is waiting for the petitioner to supplement its documented petition.
